MIAMI – A delegation of three top-ranking Jamaican Police Officials will visit the Jamaican community in South Florida on Saturday, January 21, 2006 to address crime fighting issues in Jamaica.
Deputy Commissioner Charles Scarlett – Intelligence; Assistant Commissioner Glenmore Hinds – Operation King Fish; and Inspector V.C. Campbell – Narcotics, will speak to the Jamaican Diaspora in South Florida at the Holy Family Episcopal Church, 18501 NW 7th Avenue, Miami Gardens at 2:30 PM. The group was invited to be in South Florida by the Jamaican Diaspora Southern United States, and the Jamaican Ex-Police Association of Florida.
“The issue of crime and violence in Jamaica is topic number one to Jamaicans living overseas”, says Dahlia A. Walker-Huntington, Esq., the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board Member for the Southern United States. “Jamaicans are concerned about the reports of violence and the murder rate, and the community wants the opportunity to speak with those charged with law and order to learn what is being done to fight crime in our homeland”, Walker-Huntington said.
The Officers will participate in a community forum where they will update the Jamaican community on crime fighting measures in Jamaica and answer questions from the audience. The Officers are among the highest in command of the Jamaican Constabulary Force and bring with them years of experience in law enforcement in Jamaica.
The discussion will be moderated by City of Miramar Commissioner Winston Barnes who also hosts a local daily radio talk show, Open Line on WAVS, 1170AM. As host of “Open Line” Commissioner Barnes receives numerous phone calls from concerned Jamaicans regarding the issue of crime and violence in Jamaica and brings a unique perspective to the job of moderator.
